5 Days in Da Nang: What the Extra Two Days Actually Buy You
Days one to three are the standard plan: city, mountain, Hoi An. The extra two days are not more Da Nang — they are the region. Day four is My Son, the UNESCO Cham sanctuary 69km southwest, 150,000₫ (~$6) including the buggy and the Apsara dance shows, open 06:30–17:30. The extra two days are the region, not the city
Da Nang's own sights take a day and a half. Everything past that is a drive, and this is the trip length where the drives get good.
If you are here for five days, run the three-day plan first and do not deviate: the city day, the mountain day and the Hoi An day, in that order, because the 60,000₫ Cham Museum on day one is what makes day four legible. Then use days four and five on the two things that a three-day trip cannot reach — My Son and either Hue or the coast.
There is one structural fact that changes how this reads. Since the 1 July 2025 merger, Hoi An and My Son are both legally inside Da Nang — two UNESCO World Heritage sites within the city limits, which no other Vietnamese city can claim. Hue is the only day on this itinerary that genuinely leaves the city, and it is 95–100km each way.
The honest warning for a five-day trip: this is the point where the underrated as a base, overrated as a destination problem shows up. People who fill days four and five with drives love this trip. People who expected an old town and a beach are bored by day three — that criticism is real and the answer to it is to keep moving.

Gate prices checked August 2026. Grab fares add roughly 300,000–400,000₫ a day for a couple sharing cars; My Son and Hue are both far enough out that a tour or a private car usually beats ride-hailing on price.
Day four: My Son, at opening or not at all
The sunrise tour, if you booked one
Small-group sunrise trips run $33–45 and collect around 05:00. What you are buying is the site before the coach waves and before the heat, which at a shadeless brick complex in June is not a small thing. The alternative bus-and-boat combos start from about $20 and go later. Both are cheaper than a private car for one or two people.
Gates open — this is the hour to be there
My Son opens at 06:30 and closes at 17:30. Entry is 150,000₫ (~$6) and it includes the electric buggy from the gate to the ruins and the Apsara dance performances, which run to a schedule through the day. The complex is 69km southwest, 1 to 1.5 hours from the city. Going at opening or in the late afternoon is the entire trick: the middle of the day brings the tour waves and the heat together.
The site itself, and why the museum mattered
Ten groups of brick towers built between roughly the 4th and 13th centuries by the Champa kingdom, heavily damaged by American bombing, partly reassembled. The honest version: it is a ruin field, not Angkor, and people who arrive cold are often underwhelmed. People who saw the Museum of Cham Sculpture in Da Nang first — 60,000₫, an hour, the largest Cham collection in the world — recognise the sculptural vocabulary in the stonework and get far more out of it. Two hours on site is plenty.
The boat back down the Thu Bon, if you took that format
The bus-and-boat combos return along the Thu Bồn river with a stop at a craft village, which turns a ruin visit into a full morning out and costs about $20. Slower and better value than it sounds, and the river leg is the part people remember.
Back by lunch, with the afternoon free
This is why day four is not a full day. Leave at 05:00 or 06:00 and you are back on the coast for lunch with an afternoon spare — use it for the beach, a massage at 250,000–450,000₫, or the parts of Hoi An you missed if you are routing through. The last day: three ways, one of them seasonal
Hue via the Hai Van Pass
The long day, and the best-reviewed one. This is the single most useful thing on this page if you are travelling between October and February, because almost nothing ranking says it.
The Cham Islands run a March to August/September season only. From October to February the sea state cancels 40–60% of departures against roughly 5% in season, so treat the winter months as closed rather than risky. Book the small-group speedboat operators: the cheap mass-market snorkel day trips have been nicknamed “Scam Island” in more than one Reddit thread for overcrowded boats and bait-and-switch inclusions.
What replaces it in the closed months. The instinct is to find another boat, and that is the wrong move — the sea state that cancels the Cham Islands cancels everything offshore. Two substitutes work. Son Trà reef snorkelling stays feasible on calm days because it is inside the bay rather than 15km out, and speedboat and snorkel trips run from the peninsula. Bãi Rạng, the small beach reached through the family seafood restaurants on Sơn Trà, is the easiest shore snorkelling on this coast — you buy lunch and use the beach.
The third substitute is not water at all. From October to February the region's dry-side attractions hold up better than its wet ones: Than Tai Hot Springs 30km southwest from about 450,000₫, Mikazuki's indoor dome at 350,000₫ on a weekday, and the Hai Van Pass on the rare clear winter day. Be warned on that last one: weather kills the pass views from October to January, which is a different failure mode from the islands but the same calendar.
Swim between the flags, and take that literally. The sea off My Khe is calm and swimmable from roughly March to August; from September the swell builds and red flags go up, and the water is effectively closed to casual swimmers October to December. The real danger is not sharks or jellyfish — it is rip currents, which drown people here most years. Lifeguards staff the flagged sectors roughly 05:00–19:00. Look for a darker, calmer-looking channel with debris moving out to sea: that is the rip, and it is the bit that looks safest.
Day five, the Hue version, hour by hour
North out of the city
Hue is 95–100km north. Three routes: the coastal Hai Van Pass over the top, the tunnel underneath it, or the railway line that clings to the cliffs between the two. The pass is 21km long and tops out at 496m, and the Hai Van Quan summit gate was restored and reopened in 2024. If you are doing this by road, that is the stop.
The train leg, which is the reason to take this format
The Da Nang to Lang Cô stretch of the Reunification Line runs along the cliff face above the sea and is one of Asia's great short rides. A plain seat costs from about $10; the Hai Van heritage tourist train from about $24 is a newer product that almost nobody writes about. The full $49 day trip pairs the train with a bus and covers the Citadel, Thien Mu, the Khai Dinh tomb and lunch across 12.5 hours.
The Imperial City
The Citadel ticket is 200,000₫ (~$8) and it is the reason Hue exists as a day trip — the walled imperial capital of the Nguyễn dynasty, bombed in 1968 and under long-running restoration. Give it two hours minimum. It is large, hot and largely unshaded, which is the argument for the morning slot.
Thien Mu, the tombs and lunch
The seven-storey Thiên Mụ pagoda on the Perfume River, then the Khải Định tomb — the most ornate of the royal tombs and the one most day trips include. Lunch is built into the organised formats; if you are driving yourself, Hue's own food canon is worth the stop and is markedly different from Da Nang's.
South again, over the pass this time
The right way to run this day is one direction by rail and the other by road, so you get the cliffs and the pass in one trip. Back in Da Nang, honestly a bit wrecked
Twelve to thirteen hours door to door. It is a long day and the standard advice from people who have done it both ways is that a night in Hue is better if you can spare it — you get the Citadel early, the tombs without the clock running, and the pass in daylight on a fresh morning. If you cannot, the train-and-bus day is the format that survives the compression best.
What days four and five need booked
Unlike the first three days, these two do not work as walk-ups. My Son is 69km out with no useful public transport, Hue is a 12-hour day with a train seat in it, and the Cham Islands only sail for half the year.
