2 Days in Da Nang: The City Day, Then the Choice That Defines Your Trip
Two days in Da Nang is one city day and one decision. Day one is the cheap, dense version — dawn swim, mì Quảng, the Marble Mountains at 07:30, the Lady Buddha, the beach again at 17:00, about 200,000₫ (~$8) in tickets. Day two is a fork with three branches and no universally right answer: Ba Na Hills at 950,000₫ (~$37) and a full 6–8 hours; Son Trà plus the beach, which costs almost nothing; or Hoi An, 28–30km south, from 30,000₫ on the yellow bus. Families take Ba Na, couples and photographers take Hoi An, and anyone who came for the coast takes Son Trà. The one thing that must not happen is trying to fit two of them into one day.
Day one: the city, done in the right order
Dawn on My Khe
The beach is busy at five and empty at noon, which is the opposite of what most visitors assume. Swim, or walk the promenade if the flags are red — the sea is reliable March to August and effectively closed to casual swimmers from October. Sunbeds about 40,000₫. Mì Quảng, then coffee
25,000–70,000₫ for the city's own noodle dish — turmeric-yellow, semi-dry, peanuts, herbs and a sesame cracker. Follow it with the local coffee obsession: salt coffee, the Huế import that took over Da Nang between 2024 and 2026, or a coconut coffee. The café scene is a genuine destination in its own right.
Marble Mountains, two hours, before the coaches
40,000₫ entry, 15,000₫ for the lift up, 20,000₫ for the Am Phu hell cave at the base. Open 07:00–17:30; tour groups own it 10:00–14:00. Wear shoes with grip — the marble steps are steep and slippery — and get the Huyen Khong light beam between 09:00 and 11:00 if the sun is out. Full verdict here.
Lady Buddha and the bay
Free, roughly 06:00–18:00, 67 metres of Guanyin above Linh Ứng Pagoda with the best free view in the city behind it. Shoulders and knees covered. No visible food anywhere near the macaques. Allow an hour. More here.
Lunch, then indoors while it is hot
Seafood at the Mân Thái end of the strip, or back to the An Thượng grid. Then the Museum of Cham Sculpture at 60,000₫ — small, air-conditioned, the largest Cham collection anywhere, and the thing that makes My Son make sense — or an hour of massage at 250,000–450,000₫. The second beach shift, then dinner

Dragon Bridge, or a boat

The fork, and why the weather usually decides it
Three options, all defensible, and one of them costs twenty-four times more than another. Before you pick, look at the mountain forecast rather than the city one.
Ba Na Hills sits at 1,487m with its own microclimate and is frequently fogged in when the city below is clear — most reliably between September and February, when it is a whiteout lottery. There is no weather refund. Check the mountain forecast the night before, not the city one, and if it looks bad move the day and go to the Marble Mountains instead.
That single paragraph resolves most of this decision between September and February. Ba Na Hills is the region's signature day out and it is also a 950,000₫ non-refundable bet on a mountain with its own weather. When the forecast is clear, take it. When it is not, the same money buys a full day in Hoi An with change left for dinner, and Hoi An's problem is crowds rather than cloud.
The third branch is the one nobody sells you, because there is nothing to sell: Sơn Trà and the beach. A morning on the peninsula — the Lady Buddha, the jungle loop, Bàn Cờ Peak at about 700m, the douc langurs that are the world's most important population of the species — then an afternoon on the sand. It costs a car or a jeep and nothing else. The catch is real and it turns people back at a checkpoint: automatic scooters are banned on the steep upper loop past Lady Buddha, so you need a manual bike, a car or a tour. One rule above all: do not take two branches in one day. Ba Na plus Hoi An is a fourteen-hour day sold by several operators and it is the most complained-about product in this market — you get the Golden Bridge at 11:00 when it is shoulder-to-shoulder, and Hoi An at 16:00 before the lanterns come on. Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge
Vietnam's most expensive attraction ticket, and worth paying once when the mountain forecast is clear and you are on the 08:00 cable car — the Golden Bridge is only empty from 08:00 to about 08:45 and again after 17:00. The ticket includes the record-holding cable cars, the French Village and every ride in Fantasy Park, which is why families rate it far higher than couples do. The default right answer for most two-day trips, and the cheapest of the three to reach: the yellow Bus No. 1 costs about 30,000₫ and runs every 20–30 minutes from 05:30 to 17:50, against 250,000–350,000₫ for a Grab. Day two, the Hoi An version, hour by hour
A slow morning, because Hoi An is an evening town
Resist the urge to leave at eight. The Old Town is at its worst in the middle of the day — hot, crowded and mostly tailors and souvenir shops — and at its best from late afternoon. Use the morning for the beach, a café or the market. If you want the Marble Mountains and did not do them on day one, this is when: they sit at the two-thirds point of the road south, so they cost you nothing in extra distance.
South on the coast road
28–30km, 40–55 minutes. Four ways to do it: the yellow Bus No. 1 at about 30,000₫, every 20–30 minutes from 05:30 to 17:50; a tourist shuttle at 120,000–250,000₫; a Grab car at 250,000–350,000₫ one way; or a private transfer at $15–25. The heritage ticket, and what it actually buys
The Old Town ticket is 120,000₫ and admits you to a set number of heritage houses, assembly halls and museums — not to the streets themselves. The Japanese Covered Bridge finished its restoration in 2024 and looks it. Two hours of wandering is enough for most people; the Old Town is small and the shops repeat.
Basket boats in the coconut palms, or a cooking class
The Cẩm Thanh coconut village runs the round basket boats at 150,000–200,000₫ — a spinning, splashy, very touristed hour that children find brilliant. It is a 15-minute drive from the Old Town. The quieter alternative is a Hoi An cooking class, which is one of the region's genuinely good products.
Lanterns, the river and dinner
This is the hour Hoi An earns its reputation. Lanterns on the Hoài River, boats with paper candles, the night market on An Hội islet. On the 14th day of each lunar month the full-moon Lantern Festival shuts off the electric lighting entirely — check the date against your trip, because it changes the evening completely.
The Hoi An Memories show, if you want the spectacle
Nightly at 20:00, from about 600,000₫ (~$24), and it is the biggest staged show on this coast — hundreds of performers on an outdoor stage in the Hoi An Impression theme park. It is not subtle and it is not cheap by Vietnamese standards, but nothing else in the region operates at that scale. New for 2026: a lantern-and-drone show series and a Light and Heritage Festival.
Back to Da Nang, and the one thing to check first
The yellow bus stops running at 17:50, so the evening return is a Grab at 250,000–350,000₫, a booked shuttle, or a pre-arranged car. Ride-hailing coverage in Hoi An is decent but thins after the Old Town empties. Book the return shuttle in the afternoon rather than at 21:30 on the pavement.
What to book ahead on a two-day trip
The day-two products, priced against the gate
Each branch of the fork has one booking that genuinely helps. Ba Na: a pre-purchased ticket, because the gate charges 950,000₫ and the queue is at the ticket window. Hoi An: the transport, because the bus stops at 17:50. Son Trà: the vehicle, because an automatic scooter cannot legally climb the upper loop.

Is 2 days enough in Da Nang?
Yes, and it is the most common answer travellers give each other. Two days covers the city properly on day one and one big trip on day two. The tourist consensus across years of forum threads is two to three days, and almost nobody argues that two is too few — the city is small and its best sights are cheap and close together.
Should I do Ba Na Hills or Hoi An with two days?
Hoi An, unless you have children or a guaranteed clear mountain forecast. Hoi An costs 30,000₫ to reach on the yellow bus and 120,000₫ for the heritage ticket; Ba Na costs 950,000₫ with no refund if the mountain is fogged, which it often is between September and February. Families flip that answer, because Fantasy Park's indoor rides are inside the Ba Na ticket.
Can you do Ba Na Hills and Hoi An in one day?
Operators sell it and you should not buy it. It is a fourteen-hour day that puts you on the Golden Bridge at 11:00, when it is single file, and in Hoi An at 16:00, before the lanterns come on. You see both places at their worst hours. Pick one and give it the day.

What is the best day trip from Da Nang if you only have one?
Hoi An, for most people. It is 28–30km and 40–55 minutes, it is a UNESCO Old Town that has been inside Da Nang's city limits since the July 2025 merger, and the evening is genuinely special. My Son is the better answer if you care about Cham history; Hai Van if you want the road.
Where should I stay for a two-day trip?
The My Khe strip or the An Thượng grid. Both put you on the beach side, five to ten minutes from the sand, twenty minutes from the Marble Mountains and about fifteen from the airport. City-side Hai Chau is cheaper and better for food, but you lose the 05:00 swim, which is half the point of day one.
Is Hoi An better in the day or the evening?
The evening, and it is not close. The Old Town in the middle of the day is hot and largely commercial — the recurring complaint is "shops, souvenirs, coffee, souvenirs". From 18:00 the lanterns are lit, the river fills with candle boats and the town does what it is famous for. Plan the return trip accordingly, because the 30,000₫ bus stops at 17:50.
