One Day in Da Nang: The Hour-by-Hour Plan That Beats the Coaches
Da Nang's city sights are cheap, close together and small, which is why a single day works here when it would not in Hanoi or Hue. The whole plan costs about 200,000₫ (~$8) in gate tickets — 40,000₫ for the Marble Mountains, 60,000₫ for the Museum of Cham Sculpture, nothing for the Lady Buddha — plus roughly 300,000–400,000₫ of Grab fares. The two rules that decide the day: be on the sand at 05:00 like the locals are, and be inside the Marble Mountains gate at 07:30, two and a half hours before the tour coaches land. Do not try to add Ba Na Hills; that is a full day of its own and it will eat this one.
One day in Da Nang, by the clock
Swim at My Khe, because everybody else is
The most under-reported thing about this city is that it gets up at five. The beach at dawn is full — hundreds of locals swimming, doing tai chi and drinking coffee on the promenade before the heat arrives — and it is the single most memorable free hour you will have here. Sunbeds run about 40,000₫ if you want one; lifeguards staff the flagged sectors from roughly 05:00. Between March and August the water is calm and warm. Mì Quảng for breakfast, not pho
Mì Quảng is Da Nang's dish and it is a breakfast food here: turmeric-yellow wide noodles, semi-dry in a concentrated broth, peanuts, herbs and a sesame cracker on top, for 25,000–70,000₫ (~$1–3). Mì Quảng 1A at 1A Hải Phòng is the Michelin-Selected old-guard version if you are city-side; on the beach side almost any busy shop will do it well. Marble Mountains, before the coaches
Gates open at 07:00 and the tour buses arrive between 10:00 and 14:00, so this is the window and it is not a small difference — the cave staircases become one-way queues in the middle of the day. 40,000₫ to enter, 15,000₫ for the glass lift one way (take it up, walk down) and 20,000₫ extra for the Am Phu hell cave at the base if you have the appetite. Give it two hours. The light beam in Huyen Khong cave lands best 09:00–11:00 on a sunny day, which is the one argument for going slightly later. It is 11km south on the coast road, about 20 minutes and 100,000–150,000₫ by Grab. Full verdict: the Marble Mountains, judged.
North to Lady Buddha
Twenty kilometres back up the coast road to Linh Ứng Pagoda on the Sơn Trà peninsula, where a 67m Guanyin — the tallest in Vietnam — stands over the bay. It is free, open roughly 06:00–18:00, and gives you the best free view in the city: the whole 30km arc of sand, the river mouth and the bridges. Allow 45–60 minutes. Lunch — seafood at the fishing-village end, or back to the grid
You are already at the north end, so eat there: the Mân Thái and Thọ Quang tin-roof seafood places are the cheap, good ones, roughly 60,000–100,000₫ a dish against 200,000–350,000₫ a head on the beachfront barns. The rule that keeps the bill sane is to confirm per-kilo versus per-100g before anything is weighed — read the seafood strip survival guide first. The fork: Cham Museum or a massage
This is the one genuine choice in the day, and heat usually decides it. The Museum of Cham Sculpture is 60,000₫ (~$2.40), open about 07:00/07:30–17:00, sits at the west end of the Dragon Bridge and holds the largest collection of Cham art in the world — small, air-conditioned, and the thing that makes My Son legible if you are going there later in the trip. The alternative is an hour of massage at 250,000–450,000₫ (~$10–18) plus a 50,000–100,000₫ tip, which after a 05:00 start and two hours of marble steps is a defensible use of an afternoon. Both are indoors, which matters between June and August.
Back to the sand for the second shift
The beach refills from about 17:00 and stays busy to sunset — the same crowd as the dawn shift, in better light. If the sea is red-flagged, walk the promenade instead, or take a coffee at the north end where the fishing boats come in. This is dead time in most one-day plans and it is the hour that makes the day feel like a holiday rather than a checklist.
Dinner: bánh xèo, or the rice-paper rolls
Two dishes worth spending the evening on. Bánh xèo — crisp turmeric crepes with lemongrass pork skewers — runs 7,000–20,000₫ a piece, 60,000–120,000₫ for a full feed; Bánh Xèo Bà Dưỡng at the end of alley K280/23 Hoàng Diệu is the Michelin-listed original, and there are copycats in the same alley. Dragon Bridge — but only on a Saturday or Sunday
The fire-and-water show runs Saturday and Sunday at 21:00 (plus Tet and some holidays) and lasts about five minutes: fire bursts first, then a water mist that soaks anyone near the dragon's head. The bridge closes to traffic at about 20:45, so be in place by 20:30. Best free viewing is the east bank between the Dragon Bridge and the Love Bridge. What you drop if you only have six hours
Plenty of people have a half day here rather than a full one — an afternoon flight, a Hoi An transfer, a cruise-ship call. The order below is the order to cut in. Everything in the top half is cheap, close and quick; everything in the bottom half needs either a long drive or a specific time of day.

Gate prices checked August 2026. Grab fares for the whole loop above run roughly 300,000–400,000₫ for a couple sharing cars; a scooter would halve that, but read the licence trap before you rent one.
The whole plan is built around two clocks
Heat and coaches. Get those two right and a single day here is unusually productive; get them wrong and you spend it queueing on hot marble.
The heat clock. Da Nang runs 34–35°C from May to August with 75–90% humidity year-round, and there is very little shade on the Marble Mountains staircases. Locals solved this generations ago by using the beach at 05:00 and again at 17:00 and staying indoors in between, which is why the sand is packed at dawn and nearly empty at midday. Copy them. The 14:00 slot in the plan above is indoors on purpose.
The coach clock. Tour groups own the Marble Mountains from 10:00 to 14:00 and Ba Na Hills from 09:30. Being through the gate at 07:30 is worth more than any ticket you can buy. The same logic runs through the whole site: the cheap sights here are excellent and the only thing that ruins them is arriving with everybody else.
What this day deliberately leaves out. Ba Na Hills, because it is 6–8 hours and 950,000₫. Hoi An, because it is 28–30km away and best in the evening. The Son Trà upper loop, because the road past Lady Buddha is closed to automatic scooters at a checkpoint and needs a car, a jeep or a manual bike. Each of those is a day, and they are what day two and day three are for.
Swim between the flags, and take that literally. The sea off My Khe is calm and swimmable from roughly March to August; from September the swell builds and red flags go up, and the water is effectively closed to casual swimmers October to December. The real danger is not sharks or jellyfish — it is rip currents, which drown people here most years. Lifeguards staff the flagged sectors roughly 05:00–19:00. Look for a darker, calmer-looking channel with debris moving out to sea: that is the rip, and it is the bit that looks safest.

Is one day enough for Da Nang?
For the city itself, yes. The Marble Mountains, the Lady Buddha, the Cham Museum and the beach fit comfortably into one day and cost about 200,000₫ in tickets between them. What one day is not enough for is the region — Ba Na Hills, Hoi An and My Son are each a separate full day, which is why the tourist consensus lands at two to three days rather than one.
What can you not do in one day in Da Nang?
Ba Na Hills and Hoi An, and you should not try. Ba Na is 6–8 hours including transit and a 950,000₫ ticket; Hoi An is 28–30km each way and at its best after dark. Attempting either alongside the city sights means doing both badly. Pick the city day, or pick one big trip and skip the city.
What time should you start a day in Da Nang?
05:00, and that is not a figure of speech. The beach is genuinely busy at dawn with local swimmers, it is the coolest part of the day, and starting then puts you inside the Marble Mountains at 07:30 — two and a half hours before the tour coaches land at 10:00. A 09:00 start costs you the two best hours on the hill.
How much does a day in Da Nang cost?

Yes, and it is the one combination that works, because the mountain sits at the two-thirds point of the road south.
