Quick answer
DEPENDS Excellent value one street back from the beach, and the city's one reliable overcharging problem on the beachfront itself

Da Nang eats seafood in three places at three completely different prices. The Võ Nguyên Giáp beachfront barns are the visible ones and run 200,000–350,000₫ a head (~$8–14) at somewhere like Bé Mặn, up to 3,950,000₫ a kilo for premium fish at Mỹ Hạnh. The Hồ Nghinh and Phạm Văn Đồng blocks one street back are mid-range and calmer. The Mân Thái and Thọ Quang fishing village is where you actually want to eat: Năm Đảnh is Michelin Selected and charges 60,000–100,000₫ a dish (~$2.35–4), on plastic stools, facing the bay at sunset. The mechanics are the same everywhere — point at the tank, watch it weighed, pick a preparation, pay a 30,000–100,000₫ cooking fee per dish — and so is the failure mode: a price quoted per kilo and billed per 100 grams.

How it works

You are not ordering from a menu. You are buying an animal by weight.

Almost every complaint about Da Nang seafood comes from not understanding the transaction, which is a fish-market purchase with a cooking service attached.

The sequence at every barn, quán and tin-roof shack in the city is identical. You walk in past a wall of live tanks — crab, mantis shrimp, clams, snails, grouper, lobster — and point at what you want. It is netted out and weighed in front of you on a scale by the tanks. You then choose the preparation: grilled with scallion oil (nướng mỡ hành, the default and usually the right answer), steamed with lemongrass (hấp sả), garlic butter, tamarind (rang me), or salt and chilli (rang muối ớt). Then it goes to the kitchen and you pay a cooking fee of 30,000–100,000₫ per dish on top of the weight price.

That cooking fee is legitimate and is charged everywhere. It is not a scam and it is not usually where bills go wrong. What goes wrong is the unit. The board price for shellfish is sometimes quoted per kilogram and sometimes per 100 grams, and the difference is a factor of ten. A mantis shrimp priced “45,000” means one thing on a per-100g board and something very different on a per-kg one.

Expect a foreigner price and negotiate against it. In An Thuong the same apartment is commonly listed at 6–9 million₫ to a Vietnamese renter and 14–19 million₫ in English — a 30–100% gap that is standard, not exceptional. The same logic runs through the Vo Nguyen Giap seafood barns (per-kg quoted, per-100g billed), scooter rental damage deposits and beach loungers. None of it is dangerous. All of it is avoidable by asking the price first, in writing, before you commit.

The other structural thing to understand is geography. The beachfront on Võ Nguyên Giáp is the most expensive seafood in the city and it is not the best. The best value is in the fishing village at the northern end, where the boats actually land, and where a Michelin-listed shop charges 60,000–100,000₫ a plate. That is a 10-minute Grab from the My Khe strip and it will roughly halve your bill.

The three strips

Unverified — Bà Thôi: widely recommended locally but its current branch list is thinly sourced — treat the address you find online as unverified and check on the ground. Prices checked August 2026; the published figures are Bé Mặn at 200,000–350,000₫ a head, Năm Đảnh at 60,000–100,000₫ a dish and Mỹ Hạnh's premium ceiling of 3,950,000₫ a kilo.

Before you sit down

Six defences that stop a three-million-dong bill

Confirm per kilogram or per 100 grams. Out loud. Before anything is netted.

This is the whole game. A board price of 350,000₫ for mantis shrimp is a fair per-kilo price and an outrageous per-100g one, and the ambiguity is not always accidental. Ask: một kí hay một lạng? — per kilo or per 100g? Point at the number and wait for an answer before you point at a tank.

Watch the scale, and watch what goes on it

The animal should be weighed in front of you, out of the water, in a dry basket. Water in the basket is weight you pay for. If the scale is behind a counter or the reading is not shown to you, that is your cue to leave — there are forty other places on that road.

Confirm the cooking fee per dish, not per table

30,000–100,000₫ per dish is normal and legitimate everywhere in the city. What is not normal is discovering it applies per person, or per preparation method, at the end. Ask what the fee is and how many times it will appear on the bill.

Order about 70% of what you think you want

Seafood by weight always arrives larger than it looks in the tank, the side dishes are generous, and rice and greens are cheap. Over-ordering is the single most common way people spend 800,000₫ at a place where 400,000₫ was plenty. You can always add another plate.

Check the bill line by line before you pay

Weight, unit price, cooking fee, drinks, wet wipes, peanuts. The small items that appeared without being ordered — the packet of tissues, the plate of nuts — are chargeable in Vietnam and legitimate, but they should be small. Anything you cannot account for, ask about calmly. Almost everything resolves.

Prefer one street back, or the fishing village

The structural fix rather than the tactical one. Complaints cluster on the Võ Nguyên Giáp beachfront in peak season and essentially do not exist in Mân Thái, where Năm Đảnh charges 60,000–100,000₫ a dish and has a Michelin listing. A 10-minute Grab is the cheapest insurance available.

Who it suits

Is a seafood night worth your evening?

Groups of four or moreThe format is built for it. Several dishes shared, beer by the crate, and per-head cost falls sharply because you are buying whole animals.
CouplesThe fishing-village shops at sunset are the best-value good evening in Da Nang. Strip lighting and plastic stools, so manage expectations about romance.
Solo travellersAwkward and poor value — you cannot order a kilo of anything on your own. Go to a night-market stall for grilled scallops and snails by the plate instead.
FamiliesKids like the tanks and the pointing. Order clams and scallops by the plate rather than anything requiring a shell-cracker and a bib.
Budget travellersOnly if you go to Mân Thái. On Võ Nguyên Giáp this is the most expensive food in the city; in the village it is 60,000–100,000₫ a dish.
Anxious about scamsThe mechanics are unfamiliar and the failure mode is real. Six rules on this page fix it, but if that sounds like work, eat at Năm Đảnh where the problem largely does not arise.
Book it

Nothing here needs booking — but two things are worth buying

Seafood in Da Nang is walk-in only and no reseller sells a table at Năm Đảnh. What is worth money is a guide on your first night, and a room on the right side of the coast road.

Da Nang seafood FAQ

Where is the cheapest good seafood in Da Nang?

The Mân Thái and Thọ Quang fishing village at the northern end of the beach. Năm Đảnh there is Michelin Selected and charges 60,000–100,000₫ a dish — plastic stools, tin roof, the bay in front of you. It is about ten minutes and 40,000–70,000₫ by Grab from the My Khe hotels, and it will roughly halve what the beachfront barns charge.

How much does seafood cost in Da Nang?

It depends entirely on the strip. In the fishing village, 60,000–100,000₫ a dish. At Bé Mặn on the Võ Nguyên Giáp beachfront, 200,000–350,000₫ a head. Premium fish at Mỹ Hạnh runs up to 3,950,000₫ a kilo. On top of the weight price, every place charges a cooking fee of 30,000–100,000₫ per dish.

What is the per-kilo versus per-100g trick?

Shellfish board prices in Vietnam are sometimes quoted per kilogram and sometimes per 100 grams — a lạng — and the difference is a factor of ten. If you assume kilos and the shop means lạng, a 350,000₫ mantis shrimp becomes 3,500,000₫. Ask “một kí hay một lạng?” and get an answer before anything comes out of the tank.

Do you have to pay a cooking fee for seafood in Da Nang?

Yes, and it is legitimate. You are buying the animal by weight and the kitchen charges 30,000–100,000₫ per dish to cook it. What to confirm is how many times that fee appears — per dish is standard, per person or per preparation is not.

Is the Vo Nguyen Giap seafood strip a scam?

No, but it is where the complaints cluster, and they cluster every peak season. The barns there are large, tourist-facing and expensive, and the failure modes are ambiguous units, wet scales and over-ordering. Bé Mặn at Lot 8 is the one locals still use. The structural fix is simply to eat one street back or in the fishing village.

Which cooking style should I choose?

Grilled with scallion oil — nướng mỡ hành — is the default and is rarely wrong, especially for scallops and clams. Steamed with lemongrass (hấp sả) suits crab and prawn. Tamarind (rang me) and salt-chilli (rang muối ớt) are for shrimp and squid. Garlic butter is the safe choice for a table with children.

Is Da Nang seafood good for solo travellers?

Not really. You cannot sensibly buy a kilo of anything on your own, and the barns are built for tables of four or more. Go to the night-market stalls or Con Market instead, where grilled scallops run 50,000–80,000₫ for five or six and snails are 60,000–120,000₫ a plate.

Are there Michelin-listed seafood restaurants in Da Nang?

Three, all Selected rather than starred: Năm Đảnh in the fishing village, Mỹ Hạnh on the beachfront, and Mộc Seafood, which was added in 2025. Năm Đảnh is the value pick by a wide margin — the same listing at a tenth of the price.

Man Thai puts

the boats.

The fishing-village end of the coast is where the seafood is cheapest and it is also where rooms are cheapest - studios there run roughly half what the beachfront charges, and My Khe beach is a 10-minute ride south. If your ideal evening is 60,000₫ dishes on a plastic stool watching the fleet come in rather than a 350,000₫ head at a beach-road barn, book at this end of the line.
