Hoi An: What It Is, What It Costs, and When Not to Go (2026)
Hội An sits at km 30 on the same coast road that runs past every Da Nang beach, about 40 minutes away, and since 1 July 2025 it is legally part of Da Nang rather than a separate province. It is a preserved 15th-to-19th-century trading port and the most beautiful thing within an hour of your hotel. The Old Town heritage ticket is 120,000₫ (about $4.70). Go for a full afternoon and evening — the lanterns are the point and they come on at dusk. Two hard caveats: it is genuinely overtouristed, and it sits on a floodplain and floods severely between September and December, while Da Nang drains and recovers fast.
Hoi An is now inside Da Nang, and that matters more than it sounds
Two UNESCO sites are now within one city's limits, and every statistic you read has quietly changed meaning.
On 1 July 2025 Da Nang absorbed Quang Nam province. The city went from about 1,285 km² to 11,860 km², and Hoi An and My Son are now legally inside Da Nang — two UNESCO World Heritage sites within the city limits. Districts were abolished for a city–ward system, so the old names (Hai Chau, Son Tra, Ngu Hanh Son) survive colloquially and on Google Maps but not on paperwork. Practical consequence: any visitor statistic quoted for 2025 or later covers the merged city and cannot be compared with pre-2025 figures.
The practical consequences for a visitor are small but real. Hoi An addresses that used to end "Quang Nam Province" now do not, on paperwork at least — Google Maps and everyone you speak to will keep using the old names for years. Bus, taxi and shuttle routes are unchanged. What has changed is the framing: Hoi An is no longer a different place you visit from Da Nang, it is the far end of the same city, which makes the old "which one should I base in" question slightly less binary than the internet still treats it. Positions on the coast road, so you can place it: Non Nuoc at km 12 is 18km north of Hoi An, An Thuong at km 7 is 23km, the My Khe strip at km 4.5 is 25km and Hai Chau and the airport are about 30km. The Marble Mountains sit at km 11, two-thirds of the way, which is why almost every Hoi An tour bolts them on.

Almost nothing in Hoi An is expensive on its own; the cost is the accumulation. Below are the numbers you will actually be asked for, including the two ways of getting there that people usually get wrong.

The five things worth your afternoon
The Old Town itself, on foot, after 17:00
The point of Hoi An is a preserved merchant town of mustard-yellow shophouses, tiled roofs and a river, largely closed to traffic. The point of visiting late in the day is that the coach groups leave around 16:00 and the lanterns come on at dusk. An afternoon-into-evening visit is a different town from a 10:00 one, and it costs the same 120,000₫.
The Japanese Covered Bridge
The 18th-century covered bridge that is on the 20,000₫ note and every photograph of this town. Its major restoration was completed in 2024, which drew some criticism for looking too new — it is a conservation project, not a ruin, and the paint will age. Five minutes of your time and unavoidable, since it is the hinge of the Old Town.
The full-moon Lantern Festival
Once a month the town cuts its electric lighting and runs on silk lanterns and candles floated on the Hoài river. It is the single best night to be here and it is also the single most crowded — both things are true. Check the lunar calendar against your dates before you book anything; it moves every month.
Basket boats in the Cam Thanh coconut palms
A water-coconut palm forest a few kilometres east of the Old Town, worked by round woven coracles. It has become a full-volume attraction with music and spinning-boat displays, which delights children and disappoints anyone expecting quiet waterways. The 2026 additions — drones, lanterns and a light festival
Hoi An has been building out its night economy: a lantern-and-drone show series and a Light and Heritage Festival were both added for 2026, alongside the nightly Memories show. Programming and dates shift, so confirm locally rather than from a blog. The direction of travel is clear — more spectacle, more evening ticketing.
Hoi An Old Town, hour by hour
The coaches from Da Nang and the cruise-ship transfers from Chan May land in a predictable wave and leave in another one. Arriving at the wrong end of that wave is the difference between the town people rave about and the town people complain about.
★ The hour to arrive. Lanterns come on, the river fills with boats, the temperature is survivable and most of the day-trippers have gone.
Overtourism, and the thing about the water
Two complaints. One is an opinion. The other is a floodplain.
The first is that Hoi An has been loved into a shopping street. The most quoted version of the complaint reduces the Old Town to "shops shops souvenirs coffee souvenirs shops", and between 10:00 and 15:00 that is a fair description of the main axis. The town's answer is that the architecture is still there underneath and that the crowd is a function of the hour, which is also fair. Both are resolved the same way: come at 07:00 or after 16:00, and walk one street back from the river. Do that and it is one of the best afternoons in Vietnam. Do neither and you will write the same review everyone else wrote.
The second complaint is not an opinion. Hoi An sits on a floodplain and floods severely. The Thu Bồn backs up in the monsoon and the Old Town streets go under — not occasionally, but as a normal feature of most Septembers to Decembers, with the worst years putting boats where the shops are. Da Nang, 30km north, drains well and recovers fast; city life continues through the same storms. That difference is the single most under-reported factor in the whole "which one should I base in" debate, and if you are travelling between September and early December it should decide it for you. October alone brings about 650mm of rain and November 430mm, with storms running to roughly 10 December.
The rest of the honest picture is minor by comparison. Hoi An is dead by 22:00, which suits some people and not others. Tailoring is a genuine local craft and also a high-pressure sell — agree a price and a fitting schedule in writing. And the town is small: a day and an evening covers it comfortably, two days covers it thoroughly, and the people who book four days here almost always end up day-tripping back to Da Nang for the beach.

Arrive at 17:00 and stay for the evening, or arrive at 07:00 and leave by 10:00. The coach wave from Da Nang lands around 09:00 and leaves around 16:00, and between those hours the Old Town is the souvenir street people complain about. The lanterns come on at dusk and that is what you came for.

Since the July 2025 merger, Hoi An and My Son are both inside Da Nang's city limits — which means a single base on the beach strip puts a preserved trading port 30km south, a Cham temple complex 69km southwest, a 1,487m mountain resort 35km west and one of Asia's great coastal train rides 95km north all inside day-trip range. That is the actual argument for this coast, and it is why the city rates so much higher as a base than as a destination.
